The ability to make Skype calls from Verizon 4G phones has been promised for quite a while now – it was first mentioned in the pre-launch period to the Thunderbolt.
While it was a disappointment that the Thunderbolt didn’t ship with a pre-installed Skype App, it looks like the long wait is almost over. According to Android Life the security problems which led to the delay are now fixed and the app is scheduled to be delivered to 4G phone users directly by Verizon.
While there are other video calling apps around they lack the finesse – not to mention the user base – of Skype. The new app is likely to be more like Apple’s FaceTime which connects users seamlessly across the Mac and iPhone platforms.
When finally released, the Skype app will allow voice and video calls to be made over a VOIP / data connection on both of Verizon’s 4G phones, the Thunderbolt and the Droid Charge.
