News Internet WhatsApp Adds Voice Calling for Android

Source
After months in beta, WhatsApp users on Android can now use the app's highly anticipated voice-calling feature without an invitation.

In February, WhatsApp announced the feature and rolled it out to a small number of users. Following this limited roll out, the call feature was expanded to invitation-only by those who were using the feature. On Tuesday, Android Police reported that WhatsApp's latest update to its Android app added the voice call support. The most recent WhatsApp update can be found on WhatsApp's website adds the feature, but it is not available on the Google Play Store's version, according to reports. Other sources claim that Google Play's version of WhatsApp also enables the feature and WhatsApp Calling is listed as a new feature on the app's listing. Once updated, the app will feature a new "Calls" tab on the home screen.

Last year, WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum said the voice calling feature would roll out to Android and iPhone first, followed by Windows and BlackBerry smartphones. At Facebook's F8 developers' conference last week, WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton discussed the calling feature. According to Acton, the company has been working on the feature for the past year and WhatsApp users on iOS will be getting the free voice-calling feature within a "couple weeks." When asked to confirm this statement, Acton said it would be "several" weeks and did not clarify any further. WhatsApp did not make a formal statement on the Android app's update and has not given any more information on when the feature will make its way to iOS devices.
