I’d been hearing a lot about this new game on PlayStore – Archer Diaries World Tour. They made it sound like a refreshing addition to the already existing stale bunch of archery games. I think nothing in this category is worth wasting an ink drop. At best there are some half interesting, semi-engaging games with mediocre graphics. Most of them are angry birds’ rip-offs. The claims they place behind these game can be summed up in two words – Drag n Release. There’s hardly anything in those games that challenges you or keeps you from yawning while you are tackling the toughest of challenges in the game.
Why don’t they understand that what worked for Joanne might not work for John?! Why did Temple Run not resemble with Super Mario? Why did Angry Birds not follow the same path as Temple Run or perhaps go in the direction of a first person shooter? It is because Rovio and Imangi identified “ORIGINALITY” is the key to success. Astonishingly, originality is a risk not many are willing to take.
Surprisingly, Blue Orca Studios took that leap of faith and went for an original gameplay. They didn’t just go for it, they nailed it. With targets floating in the air, zooming past on cars, appearing and disappearing, Archer Diaries World Tour has done its bit to create more than just an Angry Birds’ rip-off with mediocre graphics in the name of archery.
At first it hits you that the graphics are breathtakingly gorgeous. The colors, the depth, the architecture, the light and the use of space, all intelligently integrated, just as the doctor ordered. Finally a stage we’d all like to see set for the legendary sport of archery on our mobile devices in the 21st century. While I played and played Archer Diaries World Tours, I could not recall another game that looked just like this one or provided an experience as good as this one. This was probably because my mind did not drift away from this game at all.
Archery is a challenging sport that requires you to overcome nerves, keep your hands steady, a keen eyesight and confidence while releasing the arrow. Archer Diaries World Tour manages to send you through all those phases; in fact it takes you a step further by applying a time limit. The buttons give you total control over how and where to aim and shoot. The element of stability makes it tricky in particular when you are running out of time. The fact that you have to look really hard at times to spot the target while keeping a check on the precious few seconds left, gives a feel of hiding behind bushes while aiming for a distant deer moving around gazing in the open grasslands. This is all serious archery business. But it all comes packaged as a delightfully fun filled treat. The look and feel is attractive enough even for my 8 year old daughter.
I, being a fan of archery the sport, am finding this game to be a revolution as far as the experience, which lacked in games up till now, is concerned. The only downside is that it has only three locations. I hope Blue Orca Studios realizes the potential this game contains and brings in more locations and more challenging missions along with bigger rewards. The SFX in the game need a bit of tweaking. It’s not a Temple Run, Angry Birds or a Cut The Rope, rather it is a masterpiece of its own kind. Definitely a MUST PLAY!!
