AT&T launching slim, 4.5" screen Samsung Infuse "4G"

AT&T launching slim, 4.5" screen Samsung Infuse "4G": "

AT&T is launching what is being called the "thinnest 4G smartphone" that also happens to have one of the largest screens, dubbed the Samsung Infuse 4G. The new smartphone, which was seen floating around CES 2011 in prototype form, is dominated by a 4.5" touchscreen. It joins the HTC Inspire, Motorola Atrix, and the recently announced HP Veer in AT&T's growing, if mislabeled, stable of "4G" devices.

As mentioned, the Infuse's primary attention-grabber is the huge 4.5" Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen. "Colors are rich and bright, even while outdoors in sunlight," Jeff Bradley, senior vice president of devices for AT&T Mobility, said in a statement. This is the same technology featured on the recently launched Droid Charge, which improves on earlier AMOLED screens by using a full RGB array instead of the PenTile arrays used on Samsung's non-Plus AMOLED screens. The new design should result in overall sharper text in particular, as well as increased color fidelity in many images. Neither Samsung nor AT&T have mentioned the screen's actual resolution, but we're guessing it's the same 800 x 480 pixels as the Charge, and not the 960 x 540 qHD resolution of the HTC Sensation.

AT&T is also touting the fact that the Infuse is one of the thinnest Android phones around, measuring 8.99mm at its thinnest point. Thinness matters most when stuffing a smartphone in pants pockets, and the quoted measurement beats the slim iPhone 4 by over a quarter of a millimeter (its thickest point is 9.24mm, still just a hair thinner than the iPhone). That's good, because with a 4.5" screen, the Infuse will be taking up most of the space in that pocket.

The hardware is otherwise pretty standard, with a 1.2GHz processor, 8MP camera with 720P HD video capabilities, and HSPA+ radios. It's supplied with Android 2.2, and comes loaded with Samsung Media Hub, U-verse Mobile, U-verse Live TV, and a special free version of Angry Birds.

Like we noted Wednesday in our coverage of AT&T's announcement of the HP Veer 4G, the Infuse doesn't actually use 4G technologies like LTE or WiMax. Instead, it uses improvements to existing 3G technology referred to as HSPA+. This technology can achieve similar data transmission speeds as those other standards in some areas where AT&T has installed upgraded backhaul capability. The company said it is measuring speeds as high as 6Mbps where a theoretical maximum of 14.4Mbps is enabled. In contrast to the Atrix, Inspire, and Veer, which are limited to a maximum of 14.4Mbps throughput, the Infuse is compatible with the maximum 21Mbps HSPA+ that T-mobile has rolled out in its coverage areas.

Both AT&T and T-mobile have taken to calling their HSPA+ networks '4G' since the effective speeds are similar to those seen with current generation LTE deployments. Good luck trying to decipher AT&T's attempt to explain the differences, however.

The Samsung Infuse is set to launch May 15th for $199.99 with a two-year contract commitment.
