We all know that the best black music compilations are those put together by enthusiasts rather than suited and booted marketeers. Enthusiasts come no more enthusiastic than Joey Negro and Sean P and as time testifies, both know a good groove when they hear one. Last year their 'Soul Of Disco' set was so well received that it was only a matter of time before they hit us with the second instalment. Once again, the Disco Freaks have delved way deep into their record collections to bring you the choicest picks from the era.
As well as featuring polished, orchestrated numbers from established acts, there are also the gritty urban sounds of New York, Philadelphia and Memphis. With a DJ’s ear for your enjoyment, they’ve balanced up some time-tested gems with a few lesser-knowns.
But let me just point you to one or two outstanding cuts. Pride of place goes to dear old Gladys Knight. Pipless, her rare and collectable 'Better Than a Good Time' defines what the collection’s title is all about. As rare, Curtis’ 'How Can I Tell Her' is more mainstream disco (dig those Linn drums!) but the soul’s still in there. And for a cut where the title really does define the tune’s sound look no further than the Joneses’ 'Summer Groove'.
Something worthwhile for the Disco Die-hards and the Newbies alike!
And as the disco obsessivess will confirm, they’ve also saved you a bob or two, too. The estimated tally for buying all of these tracks individually would cost the eager collector well over ?2000.
So FUNKY HERITAGE, GREAT MUSIC and for once, a GOOD DEAL all rolled into one."
