Update BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.2.12

Update BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.2.12: "

BlackBerry Messenger app otherwise popularly known as BBM a one-of-its-kind app that allows users to chat with other BlackBerry users, effortlessly, on the go.

Graduating the app version with time and as it has been its regular practice, Research in Motion released an update to BlackBerry Messenger app pushing the app version to 5.0.2.12 as a final release.

Research in Motion did not originally specify any change log or explicitly mention about what's new in the update, but it is obvious that software updates usually refine application performance and fix bugs.

Google tightening control of Android, insisting licensees abide by 'non-fragmentation clauses'?

Google tightening control of Android, insisting licensees abide by 'non-fragmentation clauses'?: "A storm seems to be brewing over the realm of Android development. Bloomberg's Businessweek spies have received word from 'a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem' that Google is actively working to gain control and final say over customizations of its popular mobile OS. That might not sound unreasonable, and indeed Google's public position on the matter is that it's seeking to stabilize the platform and ensure quality control, but it does mark a major shift from where Android started -- an open source OS that was also open to manufacturers and carriers to customize as they wish. Not so anymore, we're told, as apparently Mountain View is now demanding that content partnerships and OS tweaks get the blessing of Andy Rubin before proceeding. The alternative, of course, is to not be inside Google's warm and fuzzy early access program, but then, as evidenced by the company recently withholding the Honeycomb source code, you end up far behind those among your competitors who do dance to Google's pipe.

Things have gotten so heated, in fact, that complaints have apparently been made to the US Department of Justice. They may have something to do with allegations of Google holding back Verizon handsets with Microsoft's Bing on board, ostensibly in an effort to trip up its biggest search competitor. Another major dissatisfaction expressed by those working with Android code is that Google needs an advance preview of what is being done in order to give it the green light -- which, as noted by a pair of sources familiar with Facebook's Android customization efforts, isn't sitting well with people at all. Google and Facebook are direct competitors in the online space and it's easily apparent how much one stands to gain from knowing the other's plans early. As to the non-fragmentation clauses in licenses, Andy Rubin has pointed out those have been there from the start, but it's only now that Google is really seeking to use them to establish control. The future of Android, therefore, looks to be a little less open and a little more Googlish -- for better or worse. As Nokia's Stephen Elop puts it:

'The premise of a true open software platform may be where Android started, but it's not where Android is going.'

Forget swapping headphones: MyStream lets you share music wirelessly

Forget swapping headphones: MyStream lets you share music wirelessly: "

Have you ever sat next to a friend on the train and wanted to listen to the music he or she was listening to, only to be forced to uncomfortably share headphones? MyStream, which is launching its free iPhone app today, wants to change this by allowing you to share your music wirelessly with friends.

MyStream allows you to see what other people in the same wireless or Bluetooth network are listening to. It lets you listen in on the songs other MyStream users are listening to, or 30 second clips from other songs on playlists they’ve created.

Says Richard Zelson, founder of MyStream, “Imagine immediately being able to listen to a song stored on a friend’s iPhone at the same time as them without needing to share their headphones or be tethered to them using a splitter.”

Richard Zelson came up with the idea when he was traveling in Europe and wanted to listen to his friends’ songs on the train. After being frustrated that the only way to do this was to share headphones, he set out to find a solution.

All audio is streamed via an iPhone’s WiFi or Bluetooth wireless technology, so the application works whether on a bus or plane and doesn’t require a connection to the Internet. When the application is being used it is public to anyone in the wireless network, and more than one person can listen in on the music. According to Richard, when the application is running there is an additional 20% battery drain on the phone.

With regards to potential copyright law violations, the company believes it has a low level of liability. The application does not enable any music sharing that is not already possible through portable speakers or an audio splitter.

MyStream’s business model is based around revenue from 5% commissions it receives from songs sold through the application, advertising from the bar on the app, and in the future, potentially from money it will charge for the app.

MyStream was founded in June 2010 by Richard Zelson, who is a first time entrepreneur. The company, which currently has five employees, has raised $800,000 in funding, $300,000 of which came from friends and family and $500,000 of which came from the founder of Blue Water Capital.

Untethered Jailbreak For iOS 4.3.1 In Beta Testing, Coming Soon

Untethered Jailbreak For iOS 4.3.1 In Beta Testing, Coming Soon: "

Stefan Esser, iPhone hacking expert has already published a YouTube video, which shows an untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak running on his iPod Touch 4G. And now iPhone Dev Team is testing the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3 / 4.3.1. Once they finish their beta testing, they will release it. Though the exploit was developed and showcased by Stefan to untethered jailbreak iOS 4.3 but he handed it over to iPhone Dev Team’s Musclenerd.

Here’s what he has tweeted.

From his tweet:

The iphone-dev-team is already beta-testing the untether. So it is up to them to give you your tool of choice.

Please don’t bother the dev-team now. The deal is: if the beta test is successfull, they are free to do whatever they want with it.

The exploit is now under beta testing by Dev Team and it is pretty much expected that they will release Redsn0w updated version to untether idevices on iOS 4.3.x. The exploit does not support iPad 2 jailbreak.

Stefan Esser has provided more details about his untethered jailbreak solution:

Meanwhile everyone should have noticed that my prediction became true and Apple released iOS 4.3.1 in order to fix the PWN2OWN vulnerability in Safari.

It was very unlikely that Apple also fixed the kernel vulnerability I used for my untether exploit. Mainly because the kernelcache binary is about 8-10 MB in size and the likelihood that Apple finds the same vulnerability in that short amount of time was very low.

However you never know until you try it. So this morning when I woke up and saw that Sn0wbreeze 2.4 beta was released I thought it would be fun to create a new video.

Unfortunately Sn0wbreeze does not work with my iPad 1 and so I had to test with my iPod 4G.

So I just used Sn0wbreeze to do a tethered jailbreak of my iPod 4G and then I manually installed the untether exploit with SSH.

In the video you can see how I switch off the iPod, then restart it, show the version, show that it is untethered and has the multitasking gestures, i show that you can buy ringtones and then I show cydia and the ninja jump game from last time.

Because several people misunderstood me in the past:

a. I repeatedly stated that I will not release a jailbreak tool – I will only give out the untether. I did not try yet, but if it is feasible the untether could be a cydia package.

b. While the vulnerability I use is in the iPad 2 kernel my untether will NOT SUPPORT the iPad 2, because there is no way to install it there (bootrom exploits fixed). – however Comex is working on that part.

c. I am not giving out any ETA again, because the Jailbreak community is simply nuts. Last time I gave an ETA and even before that had passed I got constantly insulted by people that were demanding an immediate release. Sorry guys the more you insult people with the knowledge to actually do what YOU WANT the less motivation there is to use our free time to give it to you.

d. The only reason why I did not finish the untether before the ETA was due to unexpected work overload in my real job. It had nothing todo with the untether being too hard or unreal.

e. I don’t know why the dev team has not released a redsn0w that does tethered jailbreak for 4.3.1 – I would prefer that to be available, cause sn0wbreeze obviously does not work 100% yet.

f. If you want to learn more about iPhone kernel hacking/exploitation you should come to SyScan Singapore at the end of April.http://syscan.org/index.php/sg/program

More HTC Pyramid pics leak, now with less blurrycam and extra specs: "

It looks like the steady stream of leaked HTC Pyramid pictures shows no signs of slowing down. While we've recently seen shots of the back and the front of the device, we're now getting the full monty, courtesy of xda-developers. Thankfully, Mr. Blurrycam toned things down this time around: there's a spread of the phone with its battery cover removed, and screenshots detailing additional specs. The HTC Pyramid is expected to land on T-Mobile at some point with a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 768MB or RAM, a 4.3-inch qHD (960x540) display, font-facing camera, 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, HSPA+, and Android 2.3.2 (Gingerbread) with Sense 3.0. Eurostar gets new website, apps and controversial logo

Eurostar gets new website, apps and controversial logo: "

Eurostar has started the deployment of a new visual identity, due to be rolled out across all products including, obviously, the trains.

eurostar new

Apart from moving to a more emotional and modern identity, the objective of the new branding is to position Eurostar as a European train service leader, not just limited to crossing the English Channel.

The deployment is to be completed by 5 April 2011, also with the roll-out of a new website.

The new website is announced to be 20% faster and easier to use, in particular when building multi-segment itineraries beyond the basic London-Paris-Brussels routes.

In a parallel move to airlines, Eurostar will also release new mobile apps including mobile check-in using mobile boarding passes with 2D Aztech codes.

Up until now, the print-at-home PDF boarding passes could technically be displayed on a mobile device and used to go through gates, but it was still mandatory to carry a printed paper copy.

Needless to say, the design community is quite critical about the new logo and branding.

The new logo is designed as a dynamic 3D sculpture of a lowercase “e”, available under different perspectives and even textures like iron, gold, wood or marble.eurostar logo1

eurostar2

It’s supposed to represent a fast train passing through a tunnel, which some are seeing as a cartoonish tongue and mouth, and other less innocent metaphores. To others, it reminds them of Internet Explorer with a touch of Coca-Cola!

The main concern is that a 3D sculpture, once flattened down on print, posters and indoor surfaces, loses most of its appeal and creates undue complexity with shading effects.

There is a good dose of personal taste going into branding and design, and I personally like the sense of solidity of the new brand.

Maybe it’s just because I ride on Eurostar weekly, and I need it to remain very solid.

Google demands order in Android land

Google demands order in Android land: "

How open is open? Google is reportedly tightening access to its open source Android mobile operating system and restricting the sort of tweaks manufacturers can make to the OS, multiple executives tell Businessweek.

That seems to go against Android’s open source nature. When Google first launched the OS in 2008, it was heralded as a completely open platform that would compete against Apple’s closed iPhone OS. That meant any manufacturer could install Android in their devices and make any changes necessary to it. But Android is no longer the scrappy mobile underdog — it’s the global smartphone leader with 31 percent market share — and Google can no longer afford to be idealistic.

Open source advocates will surely take issue with Android’s new direction, but anyone who has been following the platform closely will likely view the tighter controls as necessary. Users, developers and device manufacturers have been complaining for some time about Android’s fragmentation issues — which include apps and features only being available on certain phones and Android updates that take forever to reach older devices. Google’s only real solution is to take a stronger role in managing Android’s development and deployment.

Google has recently been enforcing “non-fragmentation clauses” with Android licensees, which prevents them from changing Android code too much, sources tell Businessweek. The clauses themselves are nothing new, but Google is apparently being much more vigilant about enforcing them.

Other recent moves by Google may face scrutiny from regulators. Sources say Google has tried to hold up the release of Android phones on Verizon that use Microsoft’s Bing search engine. (Microsoft this morning announced that it’s filing antitrust complaints against Google in Europe.)

Last week, it was revealed that Google will be delaying the release of Android 3.0 “Honeycomb” to the public — something that falls in line with the news that Google wants tighter control of Android.

It was inevitable that Google would eventually move away from being completely open with Android. Being completely open allowed an immature Android to gain its footing. Now that it’s a mobile titan, Google needs to ensure that Android can grow up and offer an experience as polished as Apple’s iOS.
